Washington DC Accounting Graduate Degree Programs

The Catholic University of America

Undergraduate students at Catholic University’s School of Business and Economics interested in accounting may pursue a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Accounting. The program emphasizes ethical approaches to accounting and also prepares students to sit for the CPA exam. To receive the BS in Accounting degree, students must complete all general university requirements along with 14 required courses in the accounting department. Accounting students are encouraged broaden their horizons by pursuing educational opportunities off campus. Semester study abroad programs are available to accounting students, and the Catholic University program in Rome, Italy is particularly geared toward undergraduate business majors. Accounting majors also have the unique opportunity to apply for the CUA on Wall Street program, which brings current Catholic University students on a trip to New York City to network with CUA alumni working in New York business organizations. Georgetown University

Ranked #30 on Businesweek’s 2012 list of best business schools, Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business is a solid choice for any prospective accounting undergraduate. The school’s undergraduate concentration in accounting is designed for students intending to pursue careers as public accountants, corporate or government managers, auditors, or industrial accountants. The degree is also a good choice for students interested in continuing education in taxation, economics, or business law. By the time of graduation, Georgetown accounting majors are expected to have a firm understanding of accounting concepts and methods, to be familiar with the types of ethical decisions accountants face, and to have baseline knowledge in the economic consequences of accounting policy decisions. To qualify for the accounting concentration, students must complete five courses beyond the basic Accounting 101 and 102 classes. These courses include such options as Business Law, Decision Support Systems, Auditing, Taxation and Financial Statement Analysis.

American University

Offered through the Kogod School of Business, American University’s Master of Science in Accountancy degree program is designed for students with accounting undergraduate degrees. Students without accounting backgrounds may also participate in the program with the proper prerequisite preparation. Upon completion of the MSA degree, American University students will have met the 150-hour preparation requirement to sit for the CPA exam. Graduates of the program are also prepared to enter the workforce; 95% of the most recent MSA class reported a positive career outcome, and students have gone on to work at such firms as Deloitte & Touche, KPMG, AES Corporation, and Reznick Group. American University facilitates career progress by providing recruiting and networking opportunities on campus. The flexible program can accommodate both full-time and part-time students.

The George Washington University

Housed by the School of Business, George Washington University’s Department of Accountancy has been training future accountants since 1950. The department’s prestigious faculty hails from PhD programs at Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, and other esteemed academic institutions. Graduate students may earn a Master’s of Accountancy through a 30 to 37-credit program designed to prepare students for careers in accounting. The flexible program includes evening class options, and students with undergraduate accounting experience can complete the degree within a year. The MAcc program has a diverse class profileā€”over half of the students in the program are international students. The long-term mission of the George Washingtion MAcc program is to prepare students to make significant accounting contributions to the global economy. Students are encouraged to engage in group projects and conduct individual research to develop leadership, management, and intrapersonal skills.
